The New York Times recently ran an article about a new study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. The article revealed that one session of massage therapy creates positive biological changes.
Another study performed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, by researchers from the National Institute of Health revealed an amazing discovery. One group of adults received a 45-minute deep-tissue massage and a second group received a 45-minute light massage. Blood samples were taken before and after these massages. The participants who received the deep-tissue massage displayed decreasing levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increased white blood cells, which are an essential part of the immune system. Those who received the light massage had an even greater decrease in cortisol and increase in white blood cells, as well as an increase in oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone linked with contentment.
The participants in the study were surprised by the results, but anyone who has received massage on a regular basis can attest to experiencing positive physiological effects. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stress helps account for two-thirds of family doctor visits. Other studies show the percentage as being even higher. Massage is one of the best ways to decrease stress.
